Missouri over Kentucky: NEXT

Today was my last day shooting Missouri football at home for the season and maybe for a long time. As I move on from Columbia, Mo. at the end of the school year, I'm sure I'll look back on this whirlwind of a season fondly. That being said, I wanted to make sure I knocked it out of the park in this last game.

I came away from yesterday's game feeling like I really accomplished what I had set out to do. Of course you can always grow, shoot better, shoot more features, get tighter, but after a lackluster amount of action at my last home game (where Georgia shut out Mizzou), I was happy to get some strong action off the bat, and a heavy dose of features, from the graphic to the emotional.

To cap it all off, Shane Ray set the single-season sack record for the school and after hunting for him at the end of the game, I finally found him and followed him into the stands as he hugged his mother who encouraged him to start playing football. Congrats, Shane, and thanks for that moment.

A Tough One

When the team you're covering for the local paper loses 34-0, putting up 4 yards more than the opposing team's second string running back, you know that the game isn't probably going to be your best photographic outing. Going through my take two or three times has provided a lot of opportunities for me to think about not where the Missouri Tigers went wrong but where I let a tough game shooting get the best of me. When your team goes 0-7 on third downs you can't play safe and when the few big plays happen, it's tough to be on the opposite side of the end zone each time. At last, you really need to find the images that say "losing" and not "fighting hard".

I've never covered a college team in my short career that has suffered a blow-out loss and this won't be my last time, so just like the Tigers I'm going to take my lumps and remember what to do the next time.

Diving In

I love photojournalism. I really do. I love it for the opportunity to meet people and share experiences that I normally wouldn't get to share in and then to share those experiences through my vision. But sometimes, an assignment comes along that I just love because you can't not love making the photos that happen in front of you.

On Tuesday I shot diving for the first time while on an assignment for The Columbia Missourian. While the article (and many of the photos) focused on one of the divers, Clark Thomas, I shot a bit of everything. I also want to thank Alexa Beckwith, Kendra Kieser, Lauren Reedy, and Lauren Callin who all put up with the picture-taking. The group was a blast to spend time with I was having so much fun with the access that the shoot flowed naturally.
